RN FIRST ASSISTANT II - SURGERY
The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) collaborates with the surgeon and the healthcare team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. This individual renders direct patient care as part of the perioperative role assisting the surgeon in the surgical treatment of the patient. Performs duties within approved standardized procedures and under direct supervision.
Using the nursing process, the RNFA interviews the patient to collect a comprehensive health history, performs nursing assessments, educates the patient/family and evaluates the needs of the patient.
The RNFA practices under the direct supervision of the surgeon during the surgical intervention and functions only in the first assistant role. Assisting with patient positioning, skin preparation, draping, wound exposure, handling of tissue, using instruments, suturing and providing hemostasis.
Postoperatively, the RNFA assists in the safe delivery of the patient to the PACU or ICU as needed, communicates with healthcare team and family members, performs follow up care to evaluate the patient's condition and may participate in discharge planning and postoperative teaching.
Gathers, analyzes and synthesizes data to develop “best practices” and provide benchmarks / goals for patient care. Participates in the creation, review and revision of nursing care standards and standards of practice.
Creates practice changes through research utilization and experiential learning.
Acts as a change agent within areas of experience and expertise through use of performance improvement methodology.
Minimum Position Requirements:
Coursework/Training - Successful completion of didactics of university based course in first assisting.
Coursework/Training - Successful completion of endoscopic vein artery harvesting course.
Experience: 3 years as an RN in the Operating Room.
Current California RN license.
Current Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR).
Current Healthcare Provider BLS Certification.
Current ACLS Certification.
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
2 years - RNFA experience.
Surgery experience with Endoscopic/open vein/artery harvesting.
